A body recovered from Lake Michigan near 31st Street Beach has been identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Oribi Kontein, a DePaul University graduate reported missing in late October.
Kontein, 26, was last seen Oct. 26 when surveillance cameras captured him parking his black 2016 Toyota Corolla about 3:30 p.m. at 31st Street Beach, walking west across DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
His best friend, Tena Guwor, said it wasn’t unusual for Kontein to go to the beach to meditate or swim.
The medical examiner’s office did not release information about the cause or manner of death.
Kontein’s body was pulled from the lake Nov. 4 and officially identified Monday.

Kontein emigrated from Nigeria in 2017 to attend DePaul University and graduated with a degree in criminology, his sister said, but he went back to school for massage therapy. While at DePaul, he met Guwor and his wife.
His sister, Ibi Kontein, described her brother as a “responsible, good man” who was easy to get along with. Guwor said he was a “warm, friendly and jovial person” who loved to swim and play pool.
