MELAKA: Six siblings who lost their disabled parents in an accident allegedly involving a drunk driver on June 6, received benefits from the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to lighten their burden.
Melaka unity, community relationship, human resource and consumer’s affairs committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem said the siblings will be eligible for the RM2,876.14 monthly Survivors’ Pension (Pencen Penakat) as well as a one-off funeral benefit of RM4,000.
“The monetary assistance was handed over to the eldest son of the deceased couple, Sa’eed Ezuddin, 22, for him to continue fending for his siblings.
“Socso took prompt action by helping the family after the unfortunate mishap,” he said after visiting the family at their grandmother’s home at Bukit Lintang here on Friday.
Melaka Socso director Abd Razak Omar was also present.
Ngwe said the state government will also assist four of the siblings who are still schooling.
The couple, Ezudddin Mohammad, 50, and his wife Surayah Muhamat, 46, were killed on the spot after they were hit by a vehicle driven by a suspect who was under the influence of alcohol on June 6 at Jalan Serkam Pantai in Jasin. The couple, born with disabilities, were working at the same factory for the past 25 years.
Meanwhile, Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Mispani Hamdan said the 24-year-old driver of the car has been further remanded until June 13.
He said the investigation department is waiting for a report from the Chemistry Department on the level of alcohol intoxication at the time of the accident.
