JOHOR BARU: The number of flood evacuees jumped to 1,080 people at 4pm compared to 658 people at noon on Saturday (Jan 1) in Segamat and Tangkak.
State Health and Environment Committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said that a new temporary relief shelter (PPS) had been opened in Tangkak following the flood in Kampung Seri Makmur. He added that the new PPS was at Sekolah Agama Bandar Tangkak.
"As of 4pm, the number of flood victims was 1,080 people from 271 families, with the highest number of victims from Kampung Tenang, Segamat, with 267 people from 73 families.
"Currently, there are 19 PPS in operation, where 18 are in Segamat, and one in Tangkak," he said in a statement here.
He also shared that five rivers had recorded dangerous levels - Sungai Kesang near Telok Rimba, and Sungai Tangkak near Kampung Seri Makmur, in Tangkak; and Sungai Segamat near Bandar Segamat, Sungai Muar near Kampung Awat, and Sungai Lenik near Ladang Chaah in Segamat.
Sungai Kesang had risen to 8.06m over the dangerous level of 9.92m, Sungai Tangkak is now at 4.32m from 4.00m, Sungai Segamat is at 9.64m from 9.14m, Sungai Muar at 20.95m from 19.95m, and Sungai Lenik at 5.72m from 5.50m.
Four roads had also been closed to all vehicles after being inundated with water, namely Jalan Kampung Orang Asli Peta and Jalan Kampung Orang Asli Punan in Mersing, Jalan Jabi at Kampung Bukit Tempurung, and Jalan Bangas at Kampung Simpang Loi in Segamat.
