JOHOR BARU: Five out of the 15 political parties that contested in the Johor state election lost all of their deposits.
Parti Pejuang Tanah Air Malaysia (Pejuang) topped the list after losing a total of RM210,000 for failing to secure 12.5% of votes in all of the 42 seats they contested in.
This included the seat contested by former deputy minister and Sri Gading MP Datuk Shahruddin Md Salleh who managed to gather only 465 votes (2.39%) in the four-cornered fight for the Machap seat.
Another MP who lost his deposit was former PKR man Steven Choong, who contested under Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) in this election. Choong, who was also Tebrau MP, only managed to get 2,471 votes (4.67%). The party also lost its deposit in the remaining three seats it contested in.
Also losing all their deposits was Parti Warisan, who contested in six seats as well as Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) who contested in one seat each.
All 16 independent candidates also lost their deposits.
Pakatan Harapan lost its deposits for 11 seats in this election. They consist of seven from PKR and four from Parti Amanah Negara. However, DAP managed to keep its deposits for all 16 seats it contested.
Three Perikantan Nasional candidates - two from Gerakan, one from PAS - also failed to secure 12.5% of votes and lost their deposits.
The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) however, managed to have a clean record in the election for the seven seats they contested in.
Meanwhile, Barisan Nasional who won 40 seats did not lose any of its deposits.
