PETALING JAYA: Former Malaysian permanent ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Datuk Amran Mohamed Zain, 55, has been appointed the new Foreign Ministry secretary-general.
He will be replacing Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, whose contract ended on May 31.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said Amran's appointment was based on his qualifications and vast experience in international relations and foreign affairs as a career diplomat.
Amran has been in public service for 27 years and held various positions including ambassador Turkey and ministry deputy secretary-general.
"I believe with his experience, knowledge and credibility, Amran is capable of realising the ministry's mission in drafting and implementing policies as well as developing and protecting Malaysia's interests through dynamic diplomacy and proactiveness.
"On behalf of the government, I would like to record my appreciation and gratitude to Muhammad Shahrul for his contribution to the public service and country during his tenure," added Mohd Zuki.
