PETALING JAYA: There have been no incidents of Malays and Islam being under threat in the past seven months following the formation of the unity government, says Umno veteran Tan Sri Shahrir Ab Samad.

In comparison with the the same period after Pakatan Harapan took power in 2018, he said after seven months a large-scale protest was carried out when the government planned to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).

"Although Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Azmin Ali were in the government then, efforts to push for a secular country had existed.

"This was most probably due to PKR dan DAP, which upholds the secular ideology.

"If there are talks to say that Islam is under threat now because the two political parties have remained in the unity government, it is (a) different (scenario).

"Dr Mahathir, Muhyiddin and Azmin are not in the government, (but) Barisan Nasional is in," the former Johor Baru MP added in a Facebook post on Friday (July 14).
