A BRIT jailed for trying to join a terror group has been freed even though he has been branded a threat to the public.

Shamim Ahmed, 30, is out despite being convicted of terror offences — including threats to bomb a bookshop.

Shamim Ahmed has been released from jail despite concerns he is a threat to the public

In January 2016, he was caught in Turkey at a “well-known Islamic State muster point” near its border with Syria.

He was returned to the UK and later admitted he wanted to join IS and live under Sharia law.

At the time, Ahmed was on a suspended prison sentence having threatened to bomb and stab the owner of a bookshop in Kensington, West London, for selling French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

It followed the killing of 12 people in a terror attack at the mag’s HQ in Paris in January 2015.

Following his attempt to join IS, the former security guard got six years’ jail in June 2017 after admitting the preparation of terrorist acts.

He was released in October 2022, but recalled to jail nine days later over “concerns about his behaviour”.

The Parole Board blocked another release bid last June, saying he “remains a radicalised person and would continue to pose a risk in the community”.

Despite this, the Ministry of Justice was powerless to prevent Ahmed, of Shadwell, East London, being freed in October at the end of his sentence.

The MoJ confirmed he had been released but declined to comment further.

Chris Phillips, former boss of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office, said: “The criminal justice system needs a complete overhaul if it continues to allow dangerous terrorists to be released back into society.

“There needs to be proof that they have been deradicalised rather than an automatic release or parole.”
