Repairs to the Hammersmith Bridge have spiralled up to £250m (Image: Getty)
Conservatives have called for a crumbling bridge in the UK to be renamed “Sadiq Khan” because of alleged inaction from London’s mayor.
Repairs to the Hammersmith Bridge have spiralled up to £250million and frustration has grown among MPs as costs are rapidly increasing because of the war in Ukraine.
Tony Devenish, whose London Assembly constituency includes the bridge said: “Sadiq Khan is both mayor and chairman of Transport for London. Instead of showing leadership and bringing the various parties together to try to re-open Hammersmith Bridge, he has sat idly by for five years and passed the buck.
“As long as it remains closed, it should be renamed Sadiq Khan Bridge - a road to nowhere that’s absolutely no use to anyone.”
In April this year, it will be the fifth anniversary of London’s Hammersmith Bridge’s closure, marking it a “very unhappy birthday”, according to a Labour MP.

Fleur Anderson, the Labour MP for Putney, added: “These increasing costs make it less likely the work can ever be done. I would like the Government to say ‘this is a national route. We will fund it.’”
MPs said it was a “disgrace” and an “embarrassment” that it remained closed, as reported in the Evening Standard.

In light of skyrocketing costs, the Department of Transport asked the local council and Transport for London (TfL) to pay a third of the bill.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council has stressed it can only raise that money via a road user charge or toll. Since 2019, the council has spent £29million stabilising the bridge and preparing it for strengthening and restoration, of which £8.5million has been reimbursed by the Government.
Meanwhile, stabilisation works including the “jacking up” of the bridge are set to conclude in the first half of the year, but there will be some weekend closures for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Department of Transport is still reviewing the council’s proposals and cannot confirm a reopening date until then.
MPs are keen for the repaired bridge to be able to carry buses, to improve access to schools in Hammersmith, to its Tube station and to Charing Cross Hospital.

Built in 1887, Hammersmith Bridge is one of the oldest bridges on the River Thames – and one of the most complex to repair.
Before micro-fractures forced it to shut, the famous structure carried over 20,000 vehicles a day and formed part of seven bus routes.
Following its closure, the bus routes were diverted via Chiswick and Putney bridges, increasing congestion on both main roads.
