Nigel Farage shares thoughts on anti-ULEZ protest in London

Nigel Farage said he has "never seen people so angry" as anti-ULEZ protesters gathered outside Downing Street on the first day of the expansion.

The former Ukip and Brexit Party leader joined demonstrators lining the road leading to Downing Street in the centre of London.

The GB News presenter said on Twitter: "Huge anti-ULEZ protest happening outside of Downing Street right now.

"I’ve never seen people so angry about this new tax on working people. Are you listening Sadiq Khan?"

London Mayor Sadiq Khan pressed ahead with the widening of the charging zone to the whole of the capital despite fierce opposition.

It means more drivers will be forced to pay the £12.50 daily fee for the most polluting vehicles in a bid to boost air quality.

Anti-ULEZ protesters gathered outside Downing Street today blowing whistles and banging drums.

Some carried placards saying "Stop the toxic air lie" and "ULEZ all about money", while others had mocked-up car registration plates reading: "Get Khan out"

Husband and wife Tom and Carolyn Dare were among the crowd taking part in the demonstration against the ULEZ expansion.

Ms Dare said she wanted Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to "overrule" the Labour Mayor of London. Mr Dare said Mr Khan was "shutting down London basically".

Reform UK London mayoral candidate Howard Cox, who is a pro-motorist campaigner, was also at the protest.

Mr Khan defended the widening of the zone, which previously only covered central London, during a bruising round of interviews this morning.

He told BBC Breakfast: "We now have a really effective policy to reduce air pollution.

"It's shown to be effective in central London and inner London, but I think clean air is a right not a privilege.

"What about outer London? Why shouldn't they breathe clean air?

"Why should they carry on dying prematurely in numbers that could be reversed?"

But Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the expansion is not about air pollution but a "money-raising exercise".

Mr Sunak also hit out at Mr Khan and Labour over the controversial move.

He said: "I think people and families are struggling with the cost of living, that is obvious to everyone.

"And at that time, the Labour Party, the Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan and Keir Starmer are introducing the ULEZ charge which is going to hit working families.

"I don't think that's the right priority, I don't think that's the right thing to do and I wish they hadn't done it."
