YONG PENG: MCA candidates contesting in the Johor election should use the opportunity to go for a “zero to breakthrough” record in Johor, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“We are contesting 15 seats and we must make use of this chance to achieve ‘zero to breakthrough’ results,” the MCA president said.

“It’s time for our party to brace up, seek support and votes from all races, especially from the Chinese community.

“Their mandate to us will give us a better say in policy-making in the state.”

MCA lost all 15 state seats it contested in Johor in the 2018 general election.

Addressing the party’s 73rd anniversary celebration here yesterday, Dr Wee said all candidates must reflect on the party’s foundation and find strength from its core spirit in defending the Chinese community and the nation.

During yesterday’s event, the 15 MCA candidates were introduced including the contender for the Puteri Wangsa seat, which was not announced on Thursday as some adjustments were needed.

Dr Wee revealed that Tebrau MCA division chief Ng Yew Aik would be contesting in Puteri Wangsa, saying that the Barisan Nasional chairman had given his blessing and issued the surat watikah (letter of appointment) to Ng yesterday morning.

Accompanied by rhythmic drum beats, all candidates were introduced in an upbeat and lively affair.

Dr Wee also helped put on the MCA vest for them, while imparting words of encouragement to each candidate.

Giving an impromptu speech, he said he was aware that not all were happy with the seat allocations.

“I know some are happy and some sad. I understand that we cannot make everyone happy but even if we are not happy, let’s not dwell on it.

“After taking a day to feel sad and disappointed, let’s move on stronger the next day.

“I congratulate the divisions that are contesting a seat. But I do this with a cane in my hand to ensure everyone moves forward and works even harder,” he said.

Dr Wee, who is also Johor MCA liaison committee chairman, said many Johoreans had been misled about the need for the state election with Barisan being labelled as “power-hungry”.

He cited examples of Catch-22 situation involving the passing of laws in the state assembly, adding that such a situation was unstable and not good for the people and the state’s development.

“When Pakatan Harapan was ruling in Johor, our foreign direct investments dropped significantly.

“Without a stable state administration, how will investors have the confidence to come in, especially when the economy has been badly affected after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic?” he asked.

“With this state election, we want to present a balanced representation in the state government to bring more stability to the people.

“Let’s have MCA voices in the state administration, let’s make it happen this time.”

With about two-thirds of the candidates being newbies, Dr Wee urged all of them to learn from the seniors in the party and seek support from party grassroots.

“And for the seniors, impart your knowledge and give support to the younger generation. They are the future of the party.

“Barisan is strong and capable of withstanding the trials and tribulations.

“Let’s pledge to work hard and achieve a breakthrough this time, only then will we be able to live up to the expectations of our party founders and former leaders.

“We are always steady in serving instead of making empty promises,” he added.
