A 32-year-old man was fatally shot early Monday in the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest Washington, according to D.C. police.

       The victim was identified as Ali Jamil Al-Mahdi of Southeast.

       Police said the shooting occurred about 2:20 a.m. in the 1800 block of Ninth Street NW. They said officers responding to calls for sounds of gunshots found the victim.

       Al-Mahdi died at a hospital, police said. Authorities released no other details.

       There have now been 129 homicides in the District this year, a 9 percent increase over the same period in 2020.
