LANGKAWI: A couple believed to be drug addicts were arrested at Jalan Padang Mat Sirat on Saturday (Feb 19).
Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari said the suspects were detained after a high-speed chase that resulted in several cars being hit by the suspect who drove against the flow of traffic.
"The incident occurred at about 7pm when a team of police from the Langkawi Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) conducting Ops Tapis spotted a car near Kelana Mas Commerce Centre in a suspicious manner," he said in a statement.
ACP Shariman said the suspects, after noticing police presence, accelerated their vehicle and collided with several cars before heading toward Jalan Padang Mat Sirat.
He said a high-speed chase ensued and the suspects drove against the traffic before they eventually lost control and skidded off the road into a drain.
"We found nothing illegal in the car," he said.
ACP Shariman said the couple would be detained for further investigation under Section 15(1) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
A video of the incident went viral on social media showing the car losing control with several police cars surrounding it.
