Pubs to close later for Euro 2020 final in law change - but England aren't even there yet

Boris Johnson gave the extension his approval this weekend so that footballs fans can enjoy the extra drinking time at their local, regardless of whether or not England makes it through. If the Three Lions are victorious tomorrow evening, they will go up against the winner of tonight’s last four decider between Spain and Italy on their home turf at Wembley on Sunday evening.

Pubs would normally close at 10.30pm on a Sunday night, which would have put fans at risk of having to leave venues before the game ends if it's a stalemate.

The Prime Minister will be using an emergency tweak of the law to allow pubs the extra time open, which is expected to be put to the Commons imminently.

It has been confirmed that the change of law will happen regardless of the England vs Denmark result tomorrow.

Given that Covid will force a limit on the number of fans able to watch the game in person, millions of Britons are expected to be watching from home or at a pub.

Boris Johnson previously asked football fans to enjoy the upcoming matches “enthusiastically but sensibly,” though is introducing the regulation over fears that standard closing times would force mass groups out onto the streets at the same time.

Speaking to The Sun, a government source said: "As the entire nation comes together to enjoy the Euros final on Sunday, we’re putting extra time on licenses so fans can watch the whole game without fear of being kicked out before it’s over.

"And we’re backing England to make it there.”

The England team secured their spot in the semi-final after beating Ukraine 4-0 on Saturday night.

Tomorrow, they will face off against Denmark at Wembley in the last-four.

Of the five major tournament semi-final games England has played, the team have only managed to win one.

That was in 1966 during a match with Portugal, when England won 2-1 after Bobby Charlton managed to score the winning goals.

The team then went on to win a final against West Germany in a 4-2 match, marking the only time England has won the World Cup - making the upcoming matches all the more important.
