Historic moment India succeed in dark side of the moon landing

       India released their first photo of the moon mere hours after making the historic landing on the south pole.

       Earlier today, Chandrayaan-3 successfully became the first space mission to land near the south pole of the moon.

       Taken from the Vikram lander, the picture shows a grainy shot of the surface of the moon.

       One of the legs of the Vikram lander is visible, as well as its shadow.

       The image was taken by the craft's camera after it successfully landed on a "relatively flat" part of the moon's surface, according to the tweet by Indian Space Research Organisation.

       But as no space mission has ever ventured to the dark side of the moon, the picture is the first glimpse of the as-of-now discovered surface,

       Vikram will now attempt measure the mineral composition of the lunar surface, and is expected to operate for two weeks.

       The south pole of the moon is thought to be richer in minerals than other regions.

       Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who watched the landing from South Africa where he was attending a BRICS summit, hailed the event as a "new beginning" for his country.

       India’s bold space mission takes the lander to where NASA and other space agencies believe to have detected frozen water.

       If the spaceship, launched nearly six weeks ago from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, was able to confirm these reports, India would confirm a new source of fuel, oxygen and drinking water.

       The landing achieved by India was extremely difficult, as proven by the Russian lunar failure on the weekend, when Moscow's unmanned robot lander crashed into Earth's satellite.
