Perlis Bersatu deputy chief quits party, saying it has 'strayed from original struggle'

PETALING JAYA: Perlis Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy chief Ameir Hassan has quit the party with effect from Oct 15, including his position as Arau division chief.

He said the party “had died” following the Sheraton Move in February last year and that the party “strayed from its original struggle”.

“I am no longer a Bersatu member.

“The original struggle of Bersatu has disappeared because of the greed for power and position under Muhyiddin's leadership," he told Sinar Harian on Thursday (Oct 21), referring to party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said he made the decision because the division he founded in Perlis in September 2016 with “all strength and sacrifices” had strayed “far from the original struggle”.

“The party has become a tool for those who are greedy for power regardless of the people’s sacrifices that brought Bersatu success," he said, adding that he raised the matter with Muhyiddin through an official resignation letter bearing the Arau division’s letterhead.

Ameir noted that his resignation was sent to Muhyiddin through party secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin on Thursday morning.

"I was among the first to join Bersatu. My membership number was 089, and I am resigning immediately effective the date stated on the letter.

"Dignity and integrity have become empty cries, like a fraud to the people who have given so much trust and hope to Bersatu," he said.

Ameir added that he has not decided whether to join another party or retire.

“A warrior knows no disappointment in politics," he added.
