Two Chicago police officers were shot early Monday on the West Side, officials said.

Chicago police Superintendent David Brown addressed reporters Monday outside Stroger Hospital, where the officers were rushed for treatment.

At 1:45 a.m. in the South Austin neighborhood, a commander and sergeant were shot, Brown said.

It’s not yet clear if the shots were intentionally fired at the officers, he said.

One officer was shot in the foot, Brown said, and the other in the thigh. Their conditions were stabilized at Stroger Hospital.

“They were dispersing a crowd and they heard shots, felt pain,” Brown said.

In a later post on social media, Brown said: “Thankfully, they will be all right.”

A police spokesman said there was no additional information about the shooting or the officers’ updated conditions Monday morning.

Outside the hospital, Brown also provided updates on other Fourth of July shootings, including a 5-year-old girl shot Sunday afternoon and a 6-year-old girl shot early Monday.

About 4:40 p.m., the 5-year-old was shot in the right leg in the 11700 block of South Normal Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood. She was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.

About 1 a.m. Monday, the 6-year-old and her mother were shot in the 100 block of East 119th Street, also in the West Pullman neighborhood, Brown said.

The girl and her mother were standing on the sidewalk when someone fired shots from a gray SUV, police said. The 43-year-old woman was shot in the back and arrived at Roseland Community Hospital in fair condition, according to police. The girl suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. She was in critical condition, Brown said.

“As we’ve seen too many times, tragically, someone else is being targeted and the unintended target, an innocent child, is struck,” Brown said.

Brown’s post on Twitter said 33 Chicago police officers have been shot or shot at so far in 2021.
