       Two people, including a Chicago police officer were shot Wednesday night in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the Far South Side, according to officials.

       What began as a traffic stop about 8:30 p.m. in the 9200 block of South Stony Island Avenue became a “shootout” between police and at least one suspect, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said during a media briefing outside the University of Chicago Medical Center, where the officer was being treated.

       The officer, a man, was shot in the lower left leg and his condition was not considered life-threatening, Brown said.

       One of the men being investigated suffered gunshot wounds to the torso and was being treated at a different hospital, Brown said. A second person of interest was also in custody.

       “Right now we think we have everyone that was involved in custody,” Brown said.

       At least one gun was confiscated from the vehicle officers pulled over.

       The officer got to the hospital without the Chicago Fire Department’s assistance, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

       As of about 9:45 p.m., three police vehicles partially blocked Maryland Avenue near the entrance to the emergency room and several other police vehicles were parked on the corner of 57th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue.
