A 61-year-old man was pronounced dead after officers found him Monday night stabbed in the chest in a hallway of a building in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Chicago police said.
Shortly after 10 p.m., officers responded to a fight between the victim and another person at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of West 45th Street and discovered a victim in a hallway with an apparent stab wound to the chest, police said.

The person the victim was fighting with pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the victim before fleeing the scene on foot. Officers searched the area after getting a description and found a 32-year-old man who matched the description of the culprit, police said.
The victim was taken to UChicago Medicine where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as Lorenzo Lavalle of the 4500 block of South Wood Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The man fitting the description was arrested and taken to Holy Cross Hospital for injuries suffered during the attack. Charges were pending.
