"Gassho"-style houses with steeply angled thatched roofs and "curtains of water" are seen in the Shirakawa-go settlement in the central Japan village of Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture, during a fire drill on Nov. 7, 2021. Because the wooden thatched houses are vulnerable to fire, inspection of water cannons and drills to prevent the spread of fire are held every year. When a siren rang at 8 a.m., 59 cannons at the World Cultural Heritage settlement where 114 thatched houses lie began to blast water one after another, shooting up some 20 meters into the air, while about 100 tourists at an observation platform watched over the drill.
