PETALING JAYA: Umno will defend all parliament and state seats it won in the 14th General Election, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Umno president said that this was in line with the decision made by the party's supreme council in a meeting last year.
"Umno will not compromise on any seats won during GE14. This decision was not only made by the supreme council, but was born from the voice of the grassroots who want Umno to be dominant again after GE15.
"Dominance does not mean arrogance, but a duty to restore Umno as the core party of the government administration," he said in a statement on Friday (Oct 1).
He added that as the biggest party in the country, Umno's victory was significant to ensure stability.
"Of course Umno is aware that there will be other parties contesting in the same constituency. This is normal in a democracy – but don't underestimate the strength of Umno and its grassroots," he said.
His statement came after Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that Perikatan Nasional would move forward in discussions on seat allocations for the GE15 without Umno.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president had said negotiations for seats would be made among those in Perikatan.
Muhyiddin said that there had been no indication if Umno wanted to discuss seat allocations.
Perikatan currently comprises Bersatu, PAS, Sabah STAR, Gerakan and SAPP.
