PETALING JAYA: Students at a university here were left shocked when a landslide occurred outside their dormitory.

The landslide happened just outside the male dormitory block at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), Gombak.

The recent floods also caused other damage within the campus such as a sinkhole outside a female dormitory and another landslip near the Economic and Management Sciences Faculty.

IIUM rector Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said that while the university was concerned over the matter, they were assured that the structure of the buildings was stable.

“According to experts who inspected the landslide and sinkhole, the structure is safe but we do not want the students to live there.

“We are looking at the source of the problem, which has to do with climate change, water seepage and the movement of soil.

“More thorough checks will be carried out to decide on the next course of action,” he said in a video message to students yesterday.

Prof Dzulkifli also told the students to inform the university if they notice anything unusual.

He said students in the affected dormitory had been moved to another block.

“We will hold a discussion with the Higher Education Ministry to come up with a solution,” he said.

IIUM communications office, advocacy and promotion director Dr Harmi Taazim Mohamad said the university’s administration team received information of the landslide from students on Sunday evening.

“The Fire and Rescue Department and police were alerted.

“Around 128 students living in the affected block have been shifted to another block for now,” he said.
