Wimbledon's star Emma nets place in last 16...but gets in a lather over her laundry

The 18-year-old’s third round straight-sets win over Romanian world number 45 Sorana Cirstea makes her the youngest British singles player in 62 years to reach the tournament’s second week. Before last week, Emma, who fell to her knees as she clinched victory, was ranked 338th in the world and her career prize money totalled £29,000.

Now the Wimbledon wildcard, awaiting A-level results from her school in Orpington, Kent, is guaranteed a pay day of at least £181,000 for making the last 16.

Emma, who grew up in nearby Bromley, said: “I am so, so grateful for all the support I had today. I really appreciate it.”

When asked about reaching the second week, she said: “Who would have thought? It is funny because at the start, when I was packing to come into the bubble, my parents were like, ‘Aren’t you packing too many sets of match kit?’.

“I think I am going to have to do some laundry tonight but I think they have a laundry service at the hotel, so I’m all good.”

Among yesterday’s SW19 spectators were loved-up-looking Bridgerton actress Phoebe Dynevor, 26, and her boyfriend, Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, 27.
