JOHOR BARU: The yearly tradition of flying the Jalur Gemilang at the Causeway here during National Month continues despite the closure of the Malaysia-Singapore border.
Johor public works, infrastructure and transportation committee chairman Mohd Solihan Badri said flags have been hoisted all over the Malaysian side of the Johor Causeway.
He said the committee would put up the national flag on the Causeway ever year in collaboration with concessionaire PLUS Expressways Bhd.
"The Merdeka spirit remains high among Johoreans. We hope the flags being flown at the Causeway could further lift the Merdeka spirit while also adding some cheer to the bridge which has been quiet all year long due to the Covid-19 pandemic," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 23).
He added that the "Malaysia Prihatin" theme of this year's National Day, the same as last year, is in keeping with the government's aspiration to reinforce the people's love for the country while battling the pandemic.
"The Merdeka celebration this year comes with worries and concerns among the people due to the pandemic.
"However, I am confident that we still have a deep love for the country and (people) will take the initiative to celebrate our country's independence.
"Let us all fly the Jalur Gemilang in solidarity to face the challenges ahead. It is also a sign of our togetherness in fighting the pandemic," he said.
