Andrew Neil reacted with astonishment after Michael Gove claimed Rishi Sunak could copy England’s recent match performance and pull off a last-minute comeback.

With the party still around 20 points behind Labour, and just three days until polls close, Mr Gove told Times Radio today that there will be a “last-minute Tory surge as we secure a record-breaking new term”.

He added: “With Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt hailed as the Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane of centre-right politics.”

A bemused Andrew Neil hit back: “Did I not tell you to stop taking these drugs?”

A chuckling Mr Gove retorted: “Keep hope alive!”

READ MORE: Rishi Sunak mocks Keir Starmer after Labour leader says he’ll clock off at 6pm

Mr Gove received a brutal slapdown from the broadcaster (Image: Times Radio)

It came after polling company Savanta reported today that the Tory vote is now the highest it has been since the D-Day debacle - but Labour is still streaks ahead.

They found a 15-point Labour lead, with Sir Keir riding high on 39% of the vote and the Tories on 24%.

Reform, meanwhile, has slipped to 13%.

Savanta says that despite the marginal increase in Conservative support, this poll would still produce a Labour majority of over 200, and leave the Tories with fewer than 100 MPs.

Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at Savanta said: "This is the highest Conservative vote share in a Savanta poll since early June - or more specifically, pre-D-Day debacle”.

“Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, this result - if replicated on election night - would still mean a historic Labour victory.”

"But these sorts of numbers imply heavy losses rather than electoral oblivion.
