TOKYO -- The Imperial Household Agency announced on July 6 that Emperor Naruhito received the coronavirus vaccine at the Akasaka Imperial Residence in Tokyo's Minato Ward on the afternoon of the same day.

While the agency had not intended to make the inoculation status of Imperial Family members public on the grounds of "personal information," Kenji Ikeda, vice grand steward at the agency, explained, "Considering his status as the symbol of the state, we have made the announcement with permission from His Majesty." Regarding the timing of the vaccination, Ikeda said, "We proceeded with preparations while considering the public's vaccination status."

Elderly members of the Imperial Family, including Emperor Emeritus Akihito and his wife Empress Emerita Michiko, received vaccinations in June.
