A West Side man was charged in connection with a shooting in Wicker Park that killed a man and wounded three women and another man.
Teanius Sykes, 35, appeared in court Wednesday afternoon for a hearing that was livestreamed on Youtube. Sykes faces several charges including unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated battery, reckless discharge of a firearm and attempted first-degree murder.
At about 3:40 a.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue shots were fired that killed a 32- year-old man and wounded four others including a 30-year-old man and three women in their 20s, according to the prosecutor.
Sykes, of the 3300 block of West Monroe Street, was in a relationship with one of the witnesses who is a security guard. She owned a 9 mm handgun that she kept in the glove box of her black Honda.
After the couple left a nearby bar, Sykes was standing by the Honda’s driver’s side with the door open.
Suddenly, someone began shooting toward the crowd in front of the bar and another shooter fired back.
There was a moment of stillness and after 10 seconds, bystanders on the street and sidewalk began to stand up and walk around, according to the prosecutor.
After a second round of gunfire, Sykes grabbed the handgun from the Honda’s glovebox and fired shots into the crowd in the direction of the bar, hitting one woman in the shoulder. She fell to the ground and the couple fled to their home, the prosecutor said.
Police traced the Honda’s license plate which led them to the security guard’s home, where the gun was confiscated and Sykes was taken into custody.
Additionally, prosecutors said there was video surveillance that allegedly showed Sykes shooting.
Raymond R. Jones, 32, of Champaign, was struck in the chest and died. Another individual was shot in the left leg, another in the right leg and one person was struck in the shoulder, according to the prosecutor.
Sykes’ attorney said his client “has no history of violence” and is a father of two children ages 6 and 7.
Sykes was ordered held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 20.
