       Former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has been blamed for a dire night for her party at the polls which saw them go from 48 seats to what could be 10 or less when counting ends.

       Ms Sturgeon was arrested by Police Scotland in connection with enquiries into party funding before being released without charge.

       SNP leader and First Minister John Swinney has said the General Election result had been "very poor", adding his party will have to do a lot of "soul searching".

       The SNP leader told the BBC at the count in Perth: "It's a very poor result for the SNP tonight. There will have to be a lot of soul searching as a party as a consequence of these results that have come in tonight."

       Online Mr Swinney's predescessor Ms Sturgeon received a backlash as the results revealed the independence-seeking group would have far less MPs in Westminster for the next Parliament.

       Ms Sturgeon, who was working as a pundit on ITV for their General Election coverage, was pilloried online by angry SNP voters.

       One person wrote: "She wasted mandate after mandate. This is all Nicola Sturgeon's fault the collapse of the SNP. It’s a wake up call for them. Don’t take your voters for granted."

       Another person added: "Nicola Sturgeon should, but won't, hang her head in shame. Salmond gave us 56 MPs, she's given us 8."

       And it wasn't just the voters who turned their ire on Ms Sturgeon. SNP veteran Joanna Cherry, who lost her seat of Edinburgh South West Labour's Scott Arthur, blamed the leadership of her party, including former SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford.

       She told Forth1 News: “History will show that major opportunities were squandered by Nicola Sturgeon and Ian Blackford”

       Ms Cherry was first elected in 2015 and sat on the party's front bench as justice and home affairs spokeswoman at Westminster. She rose to prominence after she led the challenge against Boris Johnson's five-week proroguing of parliament, which was ruled unlawful by the UK's highest court.

       But in 2021, the former lawyer was sacked from her party's front bench after a clash with ex-SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford. The outspoken politician also publicly disagreed with former first minister Nicola Sturgeon and the party's plans for gender reform laws.

       Following Ms Sturgeon's resignation as party leader, Ms Cherry called for the party to move towards a new leadership style, breaking away from the "toxic" atmosphere she said existed towards her in the party.
