Royal snub as Kate Middleton's carol concert to air on BBC rival after documentary row

Kate Middleton, 39, is set to host the festive carol service at Westminster Abbey at 5pm on December 8. The event, which will be the first time the Duchess of Cambridge has led such a service, will celebrate “the incredible work of individuals and organisations across the nation who go above and beyond to support their communities through the pandemic”.

However, the event will not be broadcast on the BBC after the UK’s national broadcaster aired a two-part documentary which reportedly frustrated members of the Firm.

Kensington Palace has instead confirmed the Christmas concert will air on rival channel ITV.

An announcement from Kensington Palace confirmed: “The service has been developed and delivered in partnership with Westminster Abbey and BBC Studios Events Productions, who will produce the carol service for broadcast by ITV as part of a special programme in December.”

However, this will not be the first time BBC studios have helped create a programme for other broadcasters.

The same happened in 2019 when ITV released a documentary on Prince Charles and the Duchy of Cornwall.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the move to ITV was linked to Amol Rajan’s recent documentary.

However, ITV entered talks with the Firm shortly after the first episode of ‘The Princes and the Press’ hit the airwaves.

One source said: “It was unusual for it to come to us this late.”

Another told the Sun: “This is a real coup for ITV.

“It is a brand new format - the royals have never hosted a televised TV concert before.

“And to have the Duchess leading on it is a big deal.”

The Sun’s source added: “It was arranged to be on BBC1 but it was switched in the last few days because of the terrible row over the documentary.”

The BBC’s documentary, ‘The Princes and the Press’, attempts to analyse the relationship Prince William, 39, and Prince Harry, 37, have with the media.

In response to the documentary, Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace issued a joint statement.

The statement said: “A free, responsible and open press is of vital importance to a healthy democracy.

“However, too often overblown and unfounded claims from unnamed sources are presented as facts and it is disappointing when anyone, including the BBC, gives them credibility.”

Both episodes of ‘The Princes and the Press’ are available on BBC iPlayer.
