JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly making rude remarks and obscene gestures towards Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim in a video that went viral on social media.
State police chief Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the suspect, who works as a fruit seller's assistant, was arrested in a raid on a house in Kampung Seri Desa, Ayer Hitam, at around 9.30pm on Sunday (July 11).
“The arrest was made following 10 reports lodged against the suspect for allegedly making such remarks against Tunku Ismail.
“Checks found the suspect, who is a bachelor, has previous records under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 427 of the same Act for committing mischief in 2017 and 2020,” he told a press conference at state police headquarters here on Monday (July 12).
He also said police seized a mobile phone and a SIM card, a hat, a long-sleeve black shirt and short pants as well as the Quran from the suspect.
Comm Ayob Khan added that the suspect was under remand for four days until July 15 to assist with the investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
“I would like to remind all Malaysians about our Rukun Negara which reminds us to have courtesy and morality," he said.
