Nearly 3,000 Express.co.uk readers have called on Nigel Farage to stand for parliament, in a telling poll amid swirling rumours about the politician-turned-broadcaster’s future.

Mr Farage teased a potential return to frontline politics in a speech at his 60th birthday party this week.

He told guests at the swanky London bash that he thought his milestone birthday may be the "right moment" to make a highly-anticipated announcement.

But he then joked: "Why spoil a lovely booze up" and insisted he was still making up his mind.

In his speech, Mr Farage said: "I could go to America because a very good friend of mine is about to become the 47th president of the US."

Now a poll of over 3,000 Express.co.uk readers has seen 80% of respondents say Mr Farage should stand for parliament and try to enter the House of Commons.

Some 81% said he should try yet again to gain a seat, compared to 7% who backed him going to America, and a further 7% who want him to remain a TV presenter at GB News.

In total, 2,749 readers demanded he stand for parliament.

The gag-filled Canary Wharf speech saw Mr Farage himself speculate about his future, pondering: “America is very tempting because they rather like Brits that speak proper English because they don't.

“I could get jobs there and make loads of money.

"Or I guess the other alternative is I could throw it all away, start again, throw myself back into the frontline of British politics. These are all options.

"I could throw myself back into financial penury, constant attack by the media, social media, no thanks for anything I do, even when I stand down in favour of 320 candidates from what was once known as the Conservative Party but now I think the social democrat party might suit rather better, and that's if we're being polite.

"I thought maybe on my 60th birthday it would be a good opportunity to make a big announcement.

"Well maybe it was the right moment to do it, but then I realised why spoil a lovely booze up, why spoil a fun evening, why spoil the comedy, the music, the satire and the dancing which is to come.

"So I on this 60th birthday have to tell you that I've genuinely not yet made up my mind. But I'm beginning to form in my mind what I think the right thing to do is."

Mr Farage remains honorary president of Reform UK, which while poling at 16% nationally is still not expected to win any seats.

However it will deprive the Conservatives of dozens of Labour-Conservative marginals if they refuse to sign a pact with Rishi Sunak.

Despite warnings from senior Conservatives that voting Reform UK will let in Labour, Richard Tice himself has been very open about wanting to destroy the Tories.
