A MOTORIST has denied causing the death of a young mum-of-two who was knocked down while on a "rare night out'".

Rhiannon Hall, 21, from Surrey, was hit by a car in Cheam, South West London, in October last year.

Alex Barnett, 28, failed to stop at the scene and has since been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He was charged over her death and appeared at the Old Bailey on Tuesday for a plea and case management hearing.

He pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Ms Hall by careless driving.

Judge Rebecca Trowler QC set a further case management hearing for August 17.

She indicated that a decision has yet to be made on whether to transfer the case to another court for a five-day trial.

Barnett, of Cheam, was granted continued unconditional bail.

Following surgery and several tests, doctors explained to Rhiannon’s mum that her injuries were so severe that she had no chance of making a recovery.

She spent six nights in the intensive care unit of St George’s Hospital and died from her injuries on October 22, the day after her daughter's third birthday.

“It was only the machines keeping her there,” a fundraiser set up for her family said.

The appeal on GoFundMe says that some of the young mother's friends witnessed the accident, which happened while she was on "a rare night out".
