The UN is set to significantly increase its estimate of civilian deaths during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to the head of its civilian casualty monitoring service in the country.

Uladzimir Shcherbau, head of civilian harm monitoring at the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, told Airwars and The Independent that they are planning to issue a major update on the casualty figures shortly.

“We believe it will be fairly close to the actual death toll,” he said.

Earlier, G7 leaders have condemned the “massacres” carried out by Vladimir Putin’s troops in Ukraine.

At a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels earlier, the intergovernmental body said: [We] condemn in the strongest terms the atrocities committed by the Russian armed forces in Bucha and a number of other Ukrainian towns.

“Haunting images of civilian deaths, victims of torture, and apparent executions, as well as reports of sexual violence and destruction of civilian infrastructure show the true face of Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine and its people.”

1649343595 Senate backs suspension of normal trade relations with Russia

The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly backed legislation on Thursday that would remove “most favored nation” trade status for Russia and its close ally Belarus over the invasion of Ukraine, allowing for higher tariffs on imports from the two countries.

As voting continued, the tally in the 100-member Senate was 65-0 in favor of the measure removing Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status. Russia calls the assault a “special military operation.”

Senate approval will send the measure to the House of Representatives, where passage was expected later on Thursday, sending the legislation to the White House for President Joe Biden to sign into law.

The House passed the legislation last month, but it stalled in the Senate as Democrats and Republicans disagreed over whether to also consider legislation codifying Biden’s executive order banning Russian energy imports.

The House must reconsider the bill because of changes made in the Senate.
