Heat pump evidence is damning – Ed Miliband's fanaticism putting Brits in danger

Let’s cut through the green spin and government waffle: heat pumps are absolute crap. There, I said it. And if you’re sick of being told you must fork out thousands for a technology that doesn’t work, you’re not alone. The facts are stacking up, the evidence is damning, and yet the politicians – led by Red Ed Miliband and his band of net zero fanatics – are tripling down on a policy that’s set to leave ordinary Brits colder, poorer, and more vulnerable than ever.

Let’s start with the basic facts. Heat pumps are being rammed down our throats as the eco-friendly alternative to gas boilers. The government’s target? 600,000 installations a year by 2028. The reality? Just 55,000 last year. That’s less than 10% of the target. Why? Because no one in their right mind wants one.

The price tag is eye-watering: £13,000 on average for a heat pump, compared to £2,500 for a gas boiler. Even with the government’s £7,500 “bribe,” most families are left with a bill that would make a banker wince.

Don't miss: Keir Starmer and Labour rebels are in a dangerous game of chicken over benefts

But it gets worse. In cold weather – you know, the sort we actually get in Britain – heat pumps lose up to 40% of their efficiency. So just when you need it most, your shiny new heat pump is spluttering, your house is freezing, and you’re left wondering why you ever listened to the eco-zealots in Whitehall. Now, let’s talk about heatwaves – because the government sure isn’t.

This summer, as temperatures soar past 30°C, a bombshell report commissioned by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has finally admitted what critics have been screaming for years: heat pumps, electric cars, and solar panels are all at risk of breaking down, exploding, or simply shutting off in extreme heat.

You read that right. The very technologies Ed Miliband is betting the country on could leave us sweating in the dark, or worse, facing rolling power cuts and load shedding. The report warns that our energy grid and infrastructure are at risk in “warm weather over 27°C.” That’s not even a proper heatwave!

Solar panels? They lose up to 0.5% efficiency for every degree above 25°C. In other words, when the sun is shining and you actually need them, they’re flagging. And that's when of course the government isn't paying to dim the sun. Heat pumps? They switch to cooling mode and start guzzling electricity, driving up demand just as solar output is plummeting.

Electric cars? Their batteries degrade, charge slower, and – in the worst cases – can catch fire or explode. Welcome to Net Zero Britain: Colder, poorer, and less safe. And where is Energy Secretary Ed Miliband in all this? Standing on stage at the Global Offshore Wind Conference, making ever more ludicrous promises about Britain’s “green industrial revolution.” It’s the perfect venue for him – surrounded by wind turbines and hot air, which is all he’s ever produced.

Miliband boasts about “the most significant programme of investment in homegrown clean energy in the UK’s history.” Billions for nuclear, carbon capture, hydrogen, and offshore wind. But let’s be honest: it’s all smoke and mirrors. The net zero bill is now estimated at over £1.4 trillion by 2050. Household energy bills have soared by 70% since 2020, and green levies are eating up more and more of your pay packet. A whopping 62% of Britons think the government has gone too far and fast on net zero. And 74% are worried about the cost. Can you blame them? This is a policy written by people who never have to worry about the price of heating their own homes.

Let’s be clear: the grid can’t cope with this inefficient renewables fantasy. In 2022, when the UK hit 40°C for the first time, we were on the brink of blackouts. The new report warns that peak energy demand for cooling could rise by 58% by 2100. But that spike comes just as solar panels are least effective and heat pumps are sucking up more power than ever. The result? Rolling power cuts, load shedding, and a country left at the mercy of the weather.

And don’t get me started on electric cars. Their batteries degrade above 35°C, charge slower, and are at risk of “thermal runaway” – that’s science speak for “exploding.” Is this really the future we want? This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about real people. Pensioners shivering in their homes because their heat pump can’t cope. Families facing power cuts in the middle of a heatwave. Drivers stranded because their electric car battery has melted. This is the reality of Ed Miliband’s net zero Orwellian dystopian nightmare.

And all the while, the politicians and their cronies get richer, while the rest of us pay the price – literally and figuratively. It’s time to call this out for what it is: a dangerous, expensive, and utterly unworkable fantasy. Heat pumps are crap. The net zero plan is a disaster waiting to happen. And Ed Miliband – for all his hot air – is leading us down a path to ruin.

We need real solutions, not more virtue-signalling and green gimmicks. Let people choose what works for them. Stop banning gas boilers. Stop forcing heat pumps on people. And start listening to the millions of ordinary Brits who are sick and tired of being treated like guinea pigs in a failed experiment. The facts are clear. The evidence is overwhelming. And the time for polite debate is over. Heat pumps are crap – and it’s time we said so, loud and clear.
