       1. NHS overwhelmed after millions answer call for Covid booster jabs

       The NHS was scrambling to deliver government pledges on booster jabs as millions of people answered calls to get the vaccines.

       More than 4.4 million visits were made to the NHS website, with queues of up to five hours at walk-in centres after Boris Johnson warned of a “tidal wave” of omicron facing the UK. Read the full story.

       Tory whips launched a frantic 11th hour operation on Monday to curb a backbench revolt set to be the largest of Boris Johnson’s premiership.

       3. Omicron wave driven by 'young, healthy, vaccinated' population

       The omicron epidemic is being driven by young, vaccinated people, according to mounting data from countries as diverse as the UK, Denmark and South Africa.

       4. Rishi Sunak told to abandon tax rises as omicron surges

       Rishi Sunak has been urged to put a £12bn tax raid on hold after the Bank of England warned that the new coronavirus variant poses a risk to the British economy.

       Lord Bilimoria, the chairman of Cobra beer and head of lobby group the Confederation of British Industry, said it is "absolutely the wrong time" to raise taxes given the threat facing the economy. Read the full story.

       5. Russia warns of nuclear deployment in Europe amid escalating tensions over Ukraine

       Russia threatened to deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe on Monday, escalating its stand-off with the West over Ukraine.

       Sergei Ryabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, said that Moscow would turn to the weapons if Nato fails to rule out ever using them itself. The weapons have a top range of 5,000km and so could hit numerous European capitals. Read the full story.
