Authorities are describing the weekend drowning of a young boy in Lake County as an apparent accident.
Lake Villa police said they responded about 8:50 p.m. Saturday to a residence in the 100 block of Balsam Avenue for a report of a suspected drowning.
Paramedics transported a 3-year-old boy from the residence to a nearby hospital, where the child was pronounced dead, police said. Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the boy as Zayden Zavodny.
Preliminary autopsy results consistent with death from drowning, according to a release from the coroner’s office.
On Monday, police described the incident, which took place in a backyard swimming pool, as an apparent tragic accident, but were declining to release additional details because of the ongoing investigation into the child’s death.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force was asked to assist with the investigation due to protocols and the victim’s age. Police said the family of the boy was cooperating.
“Our condolences go out to the family in their time of loss,” Lake Villa Police said in a statement released Monday.
