KUCHING: Sarawak's crime index dropped by 19% in the first three months of this year, but there was an increase in commercial and narcotics crimes.

Acting state police commissioner Dep Comm Datuk Mancha Ata said 799 cases of index crimes were reported from Jan 1 to March 19 compared to 987 in the same period last year.

"On the whole, crime in Sarawak is still under control. Although index crime decreased in the first part of this year, we will continue our efforts to reduce it further," he said at the Police Day celebration at the state police headquarters here on Friday (March 25).

Index crime consists of eight property and violent crimes, including robbery, murder, rape, burglary, vehicle theft and snatch theft.

However, DCP Mancha said commercial crime rose by 27% to 585 cases between Jan 1 and March 20 this year, with losses amounting to RM16.5mil.

The same period last year saw 459 cases with total losses of RM12.8mil.

"Efforts to curb commercial crime resulted in 215 arrests so far this year. A total of 375 people, including those from previous years' cases, have been charged in court," he said.

Narcotics crime also increased with more arrests in the first two months this year.

DCP Mancha said 161 suspects were detained for drug trafficking and 428 for drug possession, up from 139 and 334, respectively, last year.

The drugs seized this year nearly doubled in value at RM6.3mil, compared to RM3.2mil last year.

DCP Mancha also said 3,462 traffic accidents were reported in Sarawak as of March 20, an increase of 19% from 2,909 last year.

He said this was because there were more vehicles on the road after the state entered Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan on Jan 3.
