OSAKA -- A man in his 30s arrested on suspicion of driving without a license has died after he was taken to hospital midway through an interrogation, Osaka Prefectural Police's Minami Police Station announced Oct. 21.

The man complained of a stomachache after his Oct. 18 arrest on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act, and was transported to a hospital. But the doctor who examined the suspect decided he could endure detention.

According to the police station, the suspect became motionless soon after interrogation began at around 3 p.m. on Oct. 20. He was rushed to hospital, but was confirmed dead later that night.

On the night of Oct. 18, he reportedly told police, "I feel like my heart is stopping," while clutching his chest. The police station intends to conduct an autopsy while investigating the case including how and why it happened.
