Labour wants to bolster relations with Europe to combat smuggling gangs (Image: Getty)
At the General Election, Britain voted for change. And nowhere is that change more desperately needed than at our borders.

The Tories left us in the middle of the worst year ever for small boat crossings, almost a fifth higher than 2023.
£8 million a day was being spent putting up asylum seekers in hotels.
Hundreds of millions had been spent on a Migration Partnership with Rwanda that had delivered just four voluntary deportations.

After years of that escalating chaos, the British people want a serious and sensible plan to secure our borders, and fix the immigration and asylum system.
This situation will not be turned around by gimmicks but by hard graft.
That’s why, on day one of the Labour Government, the Home Secretary started work on setting up a new Border Security Command.
They will lead our fight against the criminal smuggling gangs making millions out of small boat crossings, undermining our border security and putting lives at risk.
They will be equipped with counter-terrorism style powers and draw together the work of the National Crime Agency, intelligence agencies, police, Immigration Enforcement and Border Force in relentless pursuit of those criminal networks operating across Europe and beyond.

We will soon announce the Border Security Commander who will lead those efforts.
But in the meantime, we are wasting no time implementing our approach.
We have moved swiftly to shut down the failed and eye-wateringly expensive deal with Rwanda, and replace it with a serious returns and enforcement programme.
This has already enabled us to redeploy staff and fly back hundreds of people with no right to be in the UK to their home country. Nine chartered removals flights have taken off since the start of July – including the largest in UK history with more than 200 on board.
We have also announced the immediate recruitment of up to 100 new specialist intelligence and investigation officers at the National Crime Agency to target, dismantle and disrupt organised immigration crime networks.
We know as well that – if we want to smash those international gangs – we have to go after them at source.
That means working with our overseas partners, and deploying more officers across Europe too.
Faced with complex global problems, this country should not simply be part of the response to illegal migration – we should lead it.
As well as trying to fix the shambolic situation we inherited on border security and small boats, we are also picking up the pieces when it comes to the wider immigration system.
Under the Tories, net migration trebled since 2019, driven largely by the huge increase in work visas. During the election campaign, the Prime Minister committed Labour to bringing net migration down – and that’s what we’ll do.
For too long, too many industries have been reliant on international recruitment, rather than training up workers here in Britain.
We are determined to change this, with new joint working arrangements to ensure we build our skills base here at home, rather than rely on bringing in workers from overseas, particularly in sectors like IT and engineering.

Last year, engineering visas doubled whilst the number of people who completed engineering apprenticeships almost halved. How can that be right?
The challenges facing us are significant. But we are determined to fix our broken immigration and asylum system, with serious plans not wasteful gimmicks.
And we will deliver the change the British people want and deserve.
