According to the Daily Mail, when the Duke of Cambridge was young and playing at Buckingham Palace he called for help. Instead of referring to the Queen as ‘Granny’, he called for ‘Gary’ instead.

       The column reports: “A guest who went to help ask who Gary was, assuming it must be a member of the royal household.

       “I’m Gary,” responded the Queen.

       “He hasn’t learned to say Granny yet.”

       Referring to the monarch by another name spans generations, as Prince William's son George did the same when he was younger.

       The seven-year-old called his great-grandmother Gan-Gan when he was learning to talk, the Duchess of Cambridge admitted.

       She said: “George is only two-and-a-half and he calls her Gan-Gan.”

       The Queen has also been given the nickname Lilibet.

       The Queen Mother gave her the name when she was a child, allegedly when the young then-princess couldn't pronounce her own name.

       Speaking of his two daughters, King George VI famously said: "Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy."

       A member of the public once commented on an odd encounter with Prince George whilst he was playing near the Middleton home in Berkshire.

       She said: “I was asked by a police minder not to take a photo of the children, which I didn’t, but George started stroking my dog.

       “Just to be friendly, I engaged in a bit of small talk and I asked George what his name was, even though obviously I knew it.
