GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hindu Association (PHA) has won the ‘Hindu Cultural and Heritage’ award for its work in creating awareness and bringing communities together.

The recognition is part of the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI)’s annual Heritage Recognition and Award for 2022.

GTWHI general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee said the award was aimed at improving public appreciation and recognition of ordinary men and women who have been carrying out extraordinary missions in safeguarding our cultural heritage.

Speaking after handing over the award to the PHA at the Sri Saiva Muneeswarar Alayam temple in Island Glades here yesterday, Ang said the association further received a special mention by the jury in the category of Cultural Heritage Events and Activities.

“The Penang Hindu Association has contributed towards outstanding cultural heritage-related events and activities that have been organised continuously for many years, for the purpose of promoting education, interpretation and community engagement in heritage.

“They have been strategic partners with us over the years, sharing their culture through activities where the public can participate and learn about Hindu cultural heritage.

“They have further contributed to the community via their education, public health and charity work,” she said.

Ang added that the recognition was to encourage PHA to organise cultural celebrations which should be shared and carried forward by younger generations.

“We see young people attending these events and this is how culture can be passed down through generations,” she said.

The association received a certificate, a plaque and a canvas photo, among others.

Association president P. Murugiah said the award is a great recognition for the non-governmental organisation which represents Hindus in Penang.

“We have been around for eight years and we have always participated in GTWHI events.

“To us, it is our way of contributing to society and creating awareness of our heritage and cultural celebrations,” he said.

The GTWHI Heritage Recognition and Award is an initiative launched by GTWHI in conjunction with GTWHI’s 10th anniversary celebrations and the 12th anniversary of George Town as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2020.
