PETALING JAYA: Allowing toll-free travel for vehicles coming from Singapore is "perfectly timed", as it will bring in more visitors and boost the local economy, says MCA spokesman Mike Chong Yew Chuan.
He said the government's decision to exempt tolls at the Johor Causeway and the Second Link is a "well thought-out plan and executed at the perfect timing."
He also said that this demonstrates the government's concern for the people to have a smooth traveling experience.
"When the Malaysia-Singapore land border reopens Friday (April 1), many Malaysians who have been working abroad and Singaporeans will surely take advantage of the road charge waiver to come to Malaysia for various reasons including social, tourism, or even commerce," he said in a statement Thursday (March 31)
Chong said with the increased traffic, commercial activities will increase, simultaneously helping develop the national economy and benefitting all Malaysians.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced that the toll exemption would be for all types of vehicle for seven days from April 1 to 7.
Additionally, he said, the road charge will be waived for Singapore-registered vehicles, benefitting Malaysians returning in these vehicles.
