Kemi Badenoch has said it is a “joke” to say that Sir Keir Starmer’s partial u-turn on winter fuel payments is a reaction to the economy improving.

The Daily Express has consistently demanded a U-turn after Labour scrapped the payment for up to 10 million pensioners.
“That’s a joke. We just had inflation figures this morning. It shows that inflation has doubled since they took office from the Conservatives. He is not running the economy well,” the Conservative Party leader said.
She said she would like to see a change that means pensioners getting £11,000 to £15,000 a year getting winter fuel payments.

Mrs Badenoch added it will be “too late” if Sir Keir waits until the autumn budget to set out the details.
“If he’s waiting until the budget it means that people are going to lose their winter fuel payment for another year,” she said.
The Conservatives would not support tax rises to fund extending winter fuel payments, she said.
Sir Keir said the Government had needed to “stabilise the economy with tough decisions” after taking over from the Tories, but that it was now starting to improve.

Unite Union calls for clarity over winter fuel cuts
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "Whilst this announcement on winter fuel looks like a first step in the right direction, pensioners’ minds need to be put at rest now – rather than dangling a promise to make a move in the autumn.
"Unite has always been clear that any and all cuts to winter fuel are simply picking the pockets of pensioners while the richest in society keep getting wealthier.
"The winter fuel decision should be fully reversed, and money should be found instead by implementing a wealth tax on the super-rich.”

Badenoch: 'Joke' for Starmer to claim winter fuel U-turn down to economy boost

Age UK cautiously welcomes Starmer's winter fuel u-turn
Age UK said the “devil is always in the detail” as it cautiously welcomed the winter fuel payments announcement.
Caroline Abrahams, charity director, said: “We will judge the success of any new policy proposals the Government brings forward by the extent to which they help vulnerable older people and those on low and modest incomes to be able to heat their homes adequately next winter.
“A social tariff for energy may be a big part of the longer term answer but in the short term, the Government must act quickly to support pensioners next winter – which may feel a long way off but is really only six months away.
“As always, Age UK stands ready to help and to advise ministers, drawing on what we hear from older people and from our community-based local Age UKs, and on our own analysis of what would make the most difference.”

Downing Street refuses to confirm when more pensioners will get winter fuel cash
Downing Street was unable to say how many more pensioners would receive winter fuel payments or whether the reforms would be in place this winter.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said Sir Keir wanted the changes to be introduced “as quickly as possible”.

Green Party says winter fuel U-turn is not enough
Reacting to the Prime Minister's announcement that Labour will make more pensioners eligible for the winter fuel payment, Green MP Sian Berry said:
“The Prime Minister’s statement shows just how much pressure he is now under, from the public, Greens and others in opposition, and many Labour MPs, to demonstrate he has at least some understanding that his Government’s cuts are hurting people.
“To truly right these many wrongs, the Chancellor must try harder, and use her upcoming fiscal decisions to tax extreme wealth fairly. This could not only restore payments in full to the millions of pensioners Labour has betrayed, but also enable her to reconsider other cruel political choices, including £5 billion in cuts to welfare and her refusal to cancel the two-child benefit cap.
“Together, these u-turns would save hundreds of thousands from being pushed into poverty, and Greens will be making the case for this alongside everyone affected until this Government does the right thing.”

Tory spokesman says Labour only u-turning on Winter Fuel as it's threatening their election hopes
A Conservative Party spokesman said: “Week after week at PMQs Kemi Badenoch and the Conservatives have pressed the Prime Minister to u-turn on his cruel winter fuel payments cut. And week after week Keir Starmer defended the policy.
“It’s taken the threat of his MPs losing their jobs, and his Cabinet descending into open warfare over which taxes to raise, for the Prime Minister to finally recognise the hardship his winter fuel policy has caused.
“Pensioners already suffering under this government’s spiralling inflation will want to see the detail of this latest screeching u-turn as soon as possible.”

Richard Tice pays tribute to Patrick O'Flynn
Reform deputy Richard Tice has raised a point of order to put on record his commiserations about the death of Patrick O'Flynn.
Patrick served as the Daily Express's political editor until 2014 before switching sides to pursue a career in politics with Nigel Farage.
He was elected as an MEP in 2014 and served in the European parliament before becoming a respected political commentator.
Mr Tice said he was well known "to many hon. members in this house and died after a short battle with cancer."
"He was a lobby journalist for 20 years spending many days, weeks and months in the press gallery above. He will be much missed, and can I pass on the condolences of all honourable members to his wife Carole Ann and his two children."
The speaker replied that Patrick was a "long-serving and well-respected member of the lobby, and I'm sure the whole house will wish to join me in sending our condolences to his family. He was somebody who was taken too young."

Rupert Lowe asks about Lucy Connolly
Rupert Lowe has asked Keir Starmer whether he agrees that imprisoning Lucy Connolly for "one foolish social media post - soon deleted - is clearly not an efficient or fair use of prison."
Keir Starmer claims he is "strongly in favour of free speech - we've had free speech in this country for a very long time and we protect it fiercely."
"But I'm equally against incitement to violence against other people, and I'll always support action taken by our police and courts to keep other people safe."

Lee Anderson tells Starmer 'Answer the question!' over clash on small boat deportations
Reform UK MP Lee Anderson demanded a simple answer on how many of the deported migrants on Keir Starmer's watch were failed asylum seekers who arrived in small boats on the backs of lorries.
The Prime Minister has often boasted about deporting over 20,000 people since coming to power, though it's believed many were voluntary deportations.
Mr Anderson said: "This Prime Minister keeps telling his gullible back benchers that he's deported over 24,000 people from this country since he came into power. But he won't say who these people are.
"Now it's my guess they're people who came in on work visas, students and they are simply overstayers. But I'm willing to be proved wrong if he can answer one simple question:
"How many of these people that he's deported are failed asylum seekers who've come on small boats or on the back of lorries - answer the question!"
Keir Starmer said he's proud to have removed a record number of migrants, but refused to answer Mr Anderson's question.
He attacked them for voting down his borders bill, claiming it benefits Reform not to fix the crisis.

Ed Davey also questions Winter Fuel cuts
Ed Davey demands a commitment from the PM to reversing his cuts to the Winter Fuel payment "in full".
The PM replies: "We are taking measures to help with the cost of living crisis... What I said before was that the economy is beginning to improve... as that improves I want people to feel the benefit of the measures we are taking, and that's why I want to make sure more pensioners are eligible for Winter Fuel."
"It's important we are clear we can afford the decisions we're making and that's why it will now be looked at at a fiscal event."
Sir Ed replies: "I think I appreciate what the Prime Minister has said"

Kemi: Winter Fuel Cut has driven thousands into hardship
Kemi Badenoch has said Labour MPs hate the Prime Minister.
She blasted: "He promised to protect pensioners, but his winter fuel cut has driven thousands into hardship.
"His MPs hate this - he can't see them but they all look sick just hearing what he's going to do.
"Oh they're laughing just as they laughed at the budget - hands up who here wanted winter fuel cuts? Hands up. Not a single one of them.
"The fact of the matter is this PM is destroying them! They need to look at what they're doing to the country."
She accuses Labour of "shafting the country".

Keir Starmer claims his policies have enabled a change on Winter Fuel
The PM claims it's only because of the other unpopular measures he and Reeves have taken that the economy's improving and he's able to look at changing his Winter Fuel cut.
"All of those decisions opposed by the party opposite. They've learned absolutely nothing and they're going absolutely nowhere."

Kemi Badenoch hammers Keir Starmer on Winter Fuel u-turn
Asked for a simple yes or no response on whether he plans on U-turning on Winter Fuel Allowance, Keir Starmer repeated his phrase from earlier and refused to give either a yes or no answer.
Kemi Badenoch slammed him and warned Labour MPs who voted for the hated policy will never be able to trust him again.
The Tory leader blasted: "I made it really easy for the Prime Minister - a simple question, yes or no - and he could not answer."
"I wonder how the public feel about a man who can't give a straight answer to a simple question. And you look at all them behind him cheering, when this inevitable u-turn on winter fuel comes - and it will from a desperate PM - what will he say to the 348 MPs who went over the top and voted for the winter fuel cut last September?
"Just like the British public how can any of them ever trust him again?"

Kemi hammers Starmer's refusal to rule out further tax rises
Kemi Badenoch has hammered Sir Keir's refusal to rule out further tax rises as demanded by Angela Rayner.
She branded his flailing response as "desperate stuff".
"Everyone will have heard the Prime Minister refuse to rule out new tax rises. The whole house heard it - he didn't rule it out.
"It's open warfare. The Deputy Prime Minister clearly calling the shots. What have we learnt? We're heading for new tax rises, we know inflation is up. it's just more and more bad news from a Prime Minister who has lost control."

Stop wining! Kemi Badenoch tells Starmer to take accountability
Kemi Badenoch has said Keir Starmer should "stop wining" about the previous government and focus "on what he is doing!"
"He is the Prime Minister! Look at the numbers this morning! As if inflation figures weren't bad enough we've also learned that the deputy Prime Minister is on maneouvers.
"He's lost control of the economy, he's lost control of his cabinet, she's sitting there staring at him - she knew exactly what she was doing when she briefed that into the papers.
"She is demanding 8 new tax rises - as if we haven't suffered enough! People out there are struggling, businesses are struggling, people are losing their jobs, we cannot have more tax rises."
Ms Badenoch demanded that Sir Keir rule out new tax rises this year.
Sir Keir dodged the question defended Mr Rayner's reforms of the planning system and improvement of workers' rights.

Kemi Badenoch describes Starmer's defence as 'laughable'
The Tory leader slams Keir Starmer's arguments as "laughable". "He knows that inflation was brought down by us to 2%, bang on target."
"We were reacting to a war in Ukraine, that brought inflation up all over Europe. While he's doing trade deals with the US and Europe, their inflation is going down - it's going up here. Why?
"The ONS says the inflation figures are driven by significant increases in household bills. We warned him repeatedly this is exactly what would happen, what his policies would do.
"The PM came into office saying he would tackle the cost of living crisis, he has failed. He hasn't got a clue has he?"
Keir Starmer repeats his talking point about the Liz Truss mini-budget and leaving behind a £22 billion black hole.
"We're taking measures to bring prices down, that EU deal will bring prices down. What did she do? She opposes measures to bring prices down."

Kemi Badenoch tackles Keir Starmer on inflation
Kemi Badenoch has slammed Keir Starmer after figures this morning showed inflation has shot up to 3.5% on his watch.
The Tory leader described the PM's self-flagellation on the economy as "extraordinary".
"Inflation was 2% when the Conservatives left office. It's now nearly double that.
"When will he recognise it's Labour's budget driving up inflation."
The PM hit back that inflation hit over 11% under the Tories, and said he is "confident those numbers will come down."
"I notice she can't resist grabbing any opportunity to talk the country down."

Keir Starmer hints at Winter Fuel payment u-turn
Keir Starmer has just given the biggest hint yet he may perform a major U-turn on winter fuel payments.
Asked by a Labour MP what measures he will take to help struggling pensioners, Sir Keir replied: "I recognise that people are still feeling the pressure of the cost of living crisis including pensioners."
"As the economy improves we want to make sure people feel those improvements in their lives go forward.
"That is why we want to ensure that as we go forward, more pensioners are eligible for winter fuel payments.
"As you would expect, Mr Speaker, we will only make decisions we can afford. That is why we will look at that as part of a fiscal event."

Rupert Lowe receives support on Lucy Connolly petition from very surprising fellow MP
Rupert Lowe launched a campaign against Lucy Connolly's continued incarceration this morning, calling on MPs to sign a petition.
He has just announced his first MP backer is none other than Jeremy Corbyn, the former Labour leader.
Mr Lowe said: "Thank you to the first supporter of my parliamentary motion about Lucy Connolly.
"Jeremy Corbyn. This is an issue that goes beyond usual political differences. Thank you, @jeremycorbyn.
"Lucy Connolly should not be in prison."
UPDATE: Corbyn has now withdrawn his signature, having possibly added it by accident.
