A Zion man was killed and two children critically injured when their car was hit head-on by an SUV travelling in the wrong lane near Beach Park Friday night, officials said.
The accident happened around 6:45 p.m. Friday on Green Bay Road north of Wadsworth Road near Beach Park, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s office.
The Zion motorist, 49, and two boys, 13 and 11, were southbound when their Kia Soul was hit by a northbound Jeep Patriot, police said.
A 50-year-old Zion woman behind the wheel of the Jeep was illegally passing a tow truck that was hauling a semi tractor and had pulled into the southbound lane, where the Jeep slammed into the Kia, police said.
The collision caused the Jeep to hit the tow truck and collide with a southbound Ford Explorer.
The Kia driver was transported to Vista East hospital in Waukegan where he was later pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
The 11-year-old was transported by medical helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge while the younger boy was taken by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, police said.
Neither child was wearing a seat belt, police said, and both suffered critical injuries.
The Jeep driver suffered minor injuries, as did her passenger, a Kenosha woman. The Ford Explorer driver and her passenger, both Zion residents, also suffered minor injuries. The tow truck driver was not hurt, police said.
Authorities have not released the identity of the man who was killed and an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
