Doom-laden social media claims that far-right thugs would descend for another night of rioting on Britain's streets seem to have been quashed in reality as thousands marched against racism across the country.

       As these photographs from London, Bristol, Birmingham and elsewhere show, the nation seems to have spoken with its feet and taken to the streets in defiance of the thuggish violence that has blighted the UK since the horrendous killings of three little girls in Southport on July 29.

       Right-wing yobs spurred on by misinformation online, and cheerleaders like Tommy Robinson, had hijacked the memory of the youngsters and used it to attack mosques, police officers and asylum seeker facilities.

       It was feared tonight (Wednesday) a spate of more racist and violent protests would spill onto Britain's streets, with police prepared to respond to more than 100 planned far-right gatherings and potentially around 30 more counter-protests. Unrest was anticipated in 41 of the 43 police force areas in England and Wales.

       But so far the violence seems to have been nothing to that which has been seen in recent weeks and some extraordinary scenes have unfolded instead showing thousands of people marching in solidarity with immigrants and for peace.
