Former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith said he was perplexed by the international travel rules, while speaking on TalkRadio. The remarks come as the UK has recently added France to the amber travel list after scrapping its controversial amber watchlist.

More countries have been added to the green list this week, including Germany, Austria and Norway.

Sir Iain also highlighted the importance of Britons getting back to normal life post-Covid.

Sir Iain said: "I am perplexed, I have to say.

"I find the whole traffic light system for foreign travel so confusing.

"I am not even thinking of going anywhere, just staying in the UK, you could get stuck somewhere."

India, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are being moved from the red list to the amber list as part of the changes, which come into effect from 04:00 BST on August 8.

There are no changes to the rules requiring travellers to take tests before and after their return.

Sir Iain also reiterated how important it is for Britons to get out and have their freedoms once they have been protected by the vaccines.

He pointed to his own enjoyable trip to the theatre.

He said: "I must say, I was watching a wonderful performance last night of the musicals.

"The audience was full, people loved it, the people performing loved the idea of an audience.

"It reminded me, for goodness sake, life is about us and enjoyment and being together and being social animals.

"It is wonderful to suddenly realise what we have been missing."
