Sir Jonathan Van-Tam, who became one of the nation's most recognisable faces during the Covid pandemic, has stunned fans at a football match when he turned up dressed as a nun.

The former Deputy Chief Medical Officer was a comforting voice of science during dark days when coronavirus ravaged the UK, but it appears he was looking to a higher authority to help his favourite team Boston United win a play-off match.

The 60-year-old father-of-three became well-liked for his affable nature and straight-forward delivery during press conference updates from Downing Street during lockdown.

And off the political pitch, Sir Jonathan, or JVT as he is affectionately known, appears to not take himself too seriously as he watched his side beat Hereford Town 2-0 to head to the next round of the National League North playoffs.

The photo of Sir Jonathan dressed as a nun was posted on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, by Oliver Atkin, who describes himself as the part-time photographer at Boston United.

He wrote alongside his amusing image: "And yes, it WAS Jonathan Van Tam dressed as a nun...."

Reacting to the funny shot, one person wrote he had seen "JVT" at another sporting event, writing: "I saw JVT at the darts in Wolverhampton in November. Proper lad."

While someone else, who appeared to be at the game on Saturday, noted: "He passed me and just said hello like it was nothing out of the ordinary."

In 2022 Sir Jonathan took his friend Sir Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer of England since the pandemic, to the club and was spotted enjoying a meal and chatting to supporters after the game.

Sadly on the day Boston United went down 2-1 in a thriller to league leaders Gateshead, but speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire before the game, Sir Jonathan said Sir Chris and other NHS colleagues he'd invited had a great time.

He said: "They'd heard so much about Boston United and what a fantastic club it is, I think they all just wanted to see it for themselves."
