Twelve months ago, I was enjoying a happy retirement. I had just won News Presenter of the Year for the second consecutive year for my work on GB News. My second grandchild was on the way, and life was pretty good.
Tuesday marks one year since I returned to frontline politics and returned as leader of Reform UK. A lot has happened since then. In the days leading up to this moment I had been campaigning in Dover, Ashfield and Skegness with Richard Tice after Rishi Sunak called the snap election. While meeting voters I was struck by the strength of feeling of just how badly Britain was broken and the Conservatives had completely betrayed the country.

By the end of that first week, I knew I had to act. I simply couldn’t bear the thought of letting people down.

As I travelled into London that morning, it was clear in my mind that the values of family, community, and country would be those I would fight the election campaign on. And as I entered Glaziers Hall in London Bridge, I knew my life would never be quite the same again.

What an incredible year it has been for Reform UK.
Before the general election, we had a respectable 30,000 members. That figure now stands at over 237,000. We established our bridgehead in Parliament, climbed from 10% in the polls to 32%, and won 10 councils just a few weeks ago on 1st May.
This is a phenomenal rise and one that promises to smash the two-party system.
Indeed, many commentators already believe it is dead and buried. Let’s examine why for a moment.
Trust in politics is broken. Take the issue of immigration. Cameron, May, and Johnson all promised to reduce immigration numbers.
Their manifestos of 2010, 2015, 2017, 2019, and even 2024 all vowed that immigration would decrease. But we can now see that they never had any intention of doing so.
This is because the politicians in Westminster prioritise globalisation and big business over British workers.

It is no wonder that, after 14 years of Tory mismanagement, they are polling as low as 16% with YouGov. I believe that number can go even lower.
The brand is broken. They had their chance, and they squandered it.
The British people then voted for Keir Starmer for change, to sort out the mess. But Labour has arguably been even worse.
They took the winter fuel allowance from millions of pensioners and gave billions to Mauritius for the Chagos Islands. Record numbers of illegal migrants cross the Channel while the government policy sends small family farms under.
And energy bills have risen by ￡300 due to Ed Miliband’s net zero policies—despite his promises to cut them by the same amount!
Make no mistake, this country is broken, but it can be fixed. Reform plans to do just that, starting at the local council level and working up to Westminster.
This country needs fresh ideas, fresh voices and new energy to make Britain great again.
Over the next 12 months, our attention will turn to Wales and Scotland as we take the fight to Labour and the SNP in elections on 7 May.
