Sophie Wessex and Edward tipped to join Queen at Balmoral continuing August tradition

The Countess and the Earl may take a break from their royal engagements and enjoy some time off with their children, Lady Louise Windsor, 17, and James, Viscount Severn, 13. The royal couple have previously jetted off abroad to enjoy the sun in popular holiday destinations like Spain.

In one such occasion, the Wessexes stayed on a small privately-owned uninhabited island near Formentera called Espalmador.

But this year they could choose to go on a staycation and spend some time with the Queen, who has recently arrived at her Balmoral residence.

Her Majesty closed the estate’s doors to the public and travelled to Scotland for her summer break.

The trip marks the Monarch’s first visit to Balmoral since the death of her husband, Prince Philip, in April.

On Tuesday, Balmoral Castle's Instagram account shared a post announcing its doors will be closed until April next year.

The message accompanying an image of the landmark read: “Balmoral castle and grounds is now closed to the public until April 2022.

"We would like to thank each and every visitor to the estate throughout 2021 and we hope you all had a very memorable experience.

“Despite the challenges and restrictions caused by the pandemic it’s been our pleasure to welcome so many happy faces through the gates at Balmoral.
