Former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, claims net migration is running "at an all time high" and he believes it is "time to increase the minimum income you must earn in order to get a UK work visa."

Writing in the Daily Mail, the ex-PM said: "The minimum income for most types of migrant worker coming to the UK should now go right up to £40,000 or more - because it is the right thing for migrant workers, and for the entire British workforce."

Boris Johnson said the Migration Advisory Committee put the minimum at £26,00, which he claims is "not much more than the living wage".

In a move that will make a lot of rich bosses "crackers", Boris Johnson believes the minimum income for a general work visa has been "way too low".

The former PM is piling on his successor, Rishi Sunak, to get a grip on the rising number of arrivals in the UK.

In his MailOnline column, Johnson also highlighted the positives of immigration figures that testified to this country’s "amazing higher education" sector, which he also were positive features of immigration data.

Meanwhile, the Sun reports Downing Street is looking at increasing the salary threshold, as well as clamping down on dependents of workers.

Net migration hit a record-breaking 745,000 in 2022, according to revised figures from the Office for National Statistics. Numbers showed 672,000 people came to the UK in the 12 months to June 2023.

Many economists, however, believe this level of migration is necessary and the natural consequence of a country facing staff shortages and high domestic wages.

Business groups in the past have also argued that raising the levies will harm the UK’s competitiveness and could hamper efforts to plug labour shortages.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said "shockingly high" net migration represented "a failure not just of immigration, but also of asylum and of the economy".
