The two bodies found during the search for Henrietta and Eliza Huszti are the missing sisters, police have confirmed.

The pair, both 32, were last seen on January 7 at 2.12am in Market Street at Victoria Bridge, Aberdeen. Their disappearance sparked a major rescue mission which lasted nearly three weeks.

Supt David Howieson from Police Scotland said: "The two bodies recovered from the River Dee on Friday, January 31, have now been formally identified as Henrietta and Eliza Huszti.

"Inquiries remain ongoing to establish the exact cause of death, however, there are no apparent suspicious circumstances."

Police Scotland launched a major search involving specialist divers searching in and around the area around the River Dee soon after the sisters were reported missing.

The siblings - who were part of a set of triplets - had moved to Scotland from Hungary a decade ago.

They had texted their landlady in the early hours of January 7 saying they would not return to their flat and their phones were later disconnected.

Later that day, their landlady found their belongings in their flat and contacted Police Scotland.

Specialist divers then searched the River Dee between Aberdeen Boat Club and Victoria Bridge. Police said the sisters were known to have travelled along a footpath on the southern bank of the river heading towards the boat club.

Eliza and Henrietta's brother, Jozsef, told the BBC they had spoken to their mother for 40 minutes on the Saturday before their disappearance and that they had seemed "fine".

Their sister Edit - the other triplet - told the broadcaster she had spoken to them on a video call on New Year's Eve and that they seemed happy.

Police later expanded their search along the river to the Port of Aberdeen's South Harbour and Duthie Park. Police Scotland was also in contact with the authorities in Hungary.

The Huszti family have spoken previously of the disappearance, describing it as "a very worrying and upsetting time".

They said in a statement released by police: "We are really worried about Eliza and Henrietta and all we want is for them to be found."

Police announced on January 31 that the body of a woman had been found at around 7.55am that day near the Queen Elizabeth Bridge.

Hours later, at about 9.05pm, police discovered a second body in the River Dee near the Victoria Bridge about half a mile away.
